Dual Expo Event Connects CTE and Cosmetology Students with Local Employers
Klein ISD recently held its first Career and Technical Education (CTE) Job Expo alongside its third annual Cosmetology Reverse Career Fair, featuring over 60 employers and more than 200 participating students.
The event provided CTE and Cosmetology students the opportunity to network with local employers and secure job offers.
“During the job expo, we have businesses set up with tables to meet students and share employment opportunities,” Klein ISD Director of Career and Technical Education Deborah Bronner-Westerduin said. “Students will leave this event with job offers, as potential employers have already approached many. Having access to so many businesses opens many doors for our CTE students. I am so grateful to our CTE counselors and coordinators who ensure this event is a success.”
Being in CTE programs benefits high school students because it allows them to have career and educational readiness post-graduation. Many students leave their programs with college credits and certifications that allow them to join the workforce.
“Through the Klein ISD CTE Pathways, I’ve earned my Teaching Aid Certification. At the Job Expo, I spoke with Human Resources from Klein ISD, and she told me about the opportunities the district has to offer,” Klein Forest senior Devanny said. “Especially at the elementary schools and in pre-k, she gave me a lot of information on the ‘Para to Pro’ program where I can earn my Bachelor’s degree in two years, while I work as a paraprofessional in the district.”
Cosmetology students participating in the reverse job fair are approached by companies that are looking for new talent. Students have been in the program since their junior year and are licensed or will be licensed upon graduation and will be ready to join the workforce.
“The reverse job fair helps because you can get a grasp of different companies and choose who you would like to work for based on perks and how they treat employees,” Klein Collins Senior Quentin said. “I recently got my license, and I know over the next year I will grow so much, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me.”
This event is as anticipated by employers as it is for students. Employers seeking to hire CTE students were blown away by the talent at the expo and look forward to having future Klein ISD alumni at their companies.
“We’re excited about these students, and we always need help. I am so impressed. They’ve been taught well on how to introduce themselves, look people in the eye, and shake hands,” Tonatco Cryogenics Owner Bonnie Yough said. “They have it all nailed down. I have offered some job opportunities while here.”
